Islam in a Changing World: Contemporary Perspectives on Faith, Politics, and Society
The Center for the Study of the Middle East at Indiana University is pleased to announce its third annual hybrid international conference on Islam in the Contemporary World, to be held on November 18-19, 2024. This conference will gather scholars and researchers from around the world to discuss the current theological, political, social, and cultural dimensions of Islam in the modern era.
The conference will explore a wide range of topics, including the intersection of Islamic thought and contemporary politics, ethical debates, Islamic philosophy, modern interpretations of Sharia, gender issues, Islam in different regions, Sufism, and the role of Islam in global affairs. Through panel discussions and interactive sessions, participants will have the opportunity to present their research, engage in meaningful dialogue, and form connections with fellow scholars both in-person and online.
We welcome scholars from North America, Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, Oceania, and beyond to contribute to this critical discourse on the contemporary relevance of Islam in an increasingly globalized world. This event offers a platform for intellectual exchange, networking, and collaboration on projects that advance academic research on Islam. The hybrid format will allow participants to attend either in-person at Indiana University or virtually, ensuring a diverse and accessible space for scholarly engagement.
We invite scholars to submit abstracts of no more than 250 words for consideration in this conference. Submissions should address topics related to the broad theme of Islam in the Contemporary World, focusing on contemporary developments in theology, politics, gender, culture, law, or related fields.
