This online conference engages Shia studies scholars from across the globe in discussion of various themes in Shia theology, polemics, and politics. The theological, political, philosophical, and literary notions in Shia Islam have attracted significant academic interest in the last fifty years and resulted in a growing body of academic research—from scholars in Europe, North America, and Oceania. This conference aims to enhance the vibrant academic debates on these topics and foster closer collaboration amongst Shia studies scholars and academic institutions.
Conference
The case of Shia politics and its approach towards modernity is particularly interesting as the result of the establishment and development of politics in the Islamic Republic of Iran, which must deal with many very difficult issues such as conversion, homosexuality, and non-believers. Modern Shia studies has been impacted by the potent role of Iran in terms of both theological debates and modern politics in Islam. The themes of this conference are designed to provide participants with the opportunity to present their new research in the field, allow them to discuss their ideas in an international setting beyond their own region, and would provide an opportunity for a publication on these themes. This conference expands the close relationship between North American and European scholars of Shia Islam to Aotearoa/New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific, and to the Middle East.
Conference Goals
The first goal of this conference is to establish a greater network of scholars of Shia Studies from across the globe to foster robust academic discussion and innovative ideas. While the conference is the starting point for such a network, we will be connecting scholars from North America and New Zealand via the existing academic networks of MESA (Middle East Studies Association) and MEISA (Middle East and Islamic Studies Aotearoa). The second goal of this conference is to create potential for future collaborative projects between the New Zealand, North American, European, and Middle Eastern scholarly communities, which could develop into projects for scholars with similar interests from all around the world. The third goal of the conference is to foster academic diversity in Shia Studies. Many scholars of Shia studies in the United States and Aotearoa/New Zealand come from diverse academic backgrounds and their contributions to the conference will bring new perspectives and fresh insights.
This conference will be hosted online. It will include keynote speakers, parallel panels, and online meeting rooms for participants. It will also include activities that encourage networking opportunities and mutual exchange of ideas on Shia Islam in its modern manifestations. The conference aims to develop a virtual space where participants can share resources including podcasts, weblogs, and useful videos.
The conference will be held May 30-31 (North America, Europe, Middle East)/May 31-June 1 (Oceania), 2022.
The conference will be held on two afternoons (Eastern time)/mornings (Oceania) virtually (3 hours each day). Each day will include two keynote speakers and two parallel panels.
