About

Collaborative + Engaged

Located on the Bloomington campus, the Center for the Study of the Middle East (CSME) is a Title VI National Resource Center funded by the Department of Education, which endeavors to promote scholarly and cultural understanding of the Middle East via outreach, financial and academic support, and campus events.

CSME engages with other IU centers in collaborative activities with community colleges and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) by promoting the internationalization of the curriculum through teaching students and training instructors.

Part of the School of Global and International Studies

CSME is part of the School of Global and International Studies (SGIS) in the College of Arts and Sciences. SGIS offers versatile majors that prepare students for 21st century careers. We are located in the new Global and International Studies Building, which offers a wealth of resources and leading-edge technology for our students.

CSME supports the professionalization of the teaching of the main languages of the Middle East and North Africa: Arabic, Hebrew, Kurdish, Persian, and Turkish.
